Frequenty asked questions

  • What credentials does Emmerson Packaging have?
    • Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Certified: The Sustainable Green Printing Partnership holds printers to some of the industry’s highest standards for sustainability across each partner’s entire facility or facilities. The SGP designation indicates membership in North America’s most elite tier of sustainable printing companies. Emmerson Packaging is proud to be among the 3.6% of U.S. & Canadian printers that are SGP Certified.
    • SQF Edition 9: Emmerson Packaging facilities are certified to SQF Edition 9; a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) compliant scheme, which is comparable to BRC, and is administered by the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQFI). We have also maintained a “Green” rating through the unannounced Ethical Audit by Walmart.
  • What associations are Emmerson Packaging a member of?
    • Flexographic Technical Association: The Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) is a nonprofit educational and scientific organization that serves to promote and support the flexographic industry. Each year, the FTA holds various events, publishes new flexographic resources, awards scholarships to individuals interested in studying subjects related to flexography, and recognizes outstanding flexographic innovations.
    • How2Recycle®: How2Recycle is a standardized labelling system that reduces confusion by clearly communicating recycling instructions to the public. Being a How2Recycle member improves the reliability, completeness, and transparency of recyclability claims. Where there is not one consistent approach to recycling across North America, How2Recycle enables consumers to take certain flexible plastic packages to designated store drop-off sites, where they are collected and undergo a special recycling process, eliminating the risk of the product going to landfill.
    • Sustainable Packaging Coalition: The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a membership-based collaborative that believes in the power of industry to make packaging more sustainable. They are the leading voice on sustainable packaging and are passionate about creating packaging that is good for people and the environment. The foundation of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s work is based on the principles of collaboration, education, and action.
    • Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters: Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters is the voice of the manufacturing and exporting industry in Canada. CME is run by manufacturers for manufacturers, with numerous resources and programs available to help Canadian manufacturing businesses grow. CME believes the growth of the manufacturing sector is critical to the success of Canada’s economy.
  • What sets Emmerson Packaging apart from other manufacturers in terms of sustainability?
    • We have been producing sustainable, recycle-ready stand-up pouches since 2019
    • We offer a team of dedicated sustainable packaging R&D experts to ensure that you can meet your packaging goals.
    • Beyond packaging innovations, our manufacturing facilities have long concentrated on sustainability initiatives, and we are SQF level 2 Certified.
    • We were the first flexographic printer in North America to adopt ISO 14001 in order to guide the creation of our environmental management system.
    • We were also the first Sustainable Green Printer (SGP) in Canada and the 6th in the US.
    • Our products are peanut free – and we have complete product traceability!
  • What do I need to know about PCR?
    • PCR materials come from plastic products that have been recycled, collected, cleaned, reprocessed into PCR resin, and then made into something new. An example of products that are used to create PCR resin would be HDPE, milk jugs.
    • PCR provides excellent packaging sustainability benefits, but they may impact print quality and/or film consistency. If the package is a lamination of two substrates, the PCR can be added to the substrate that is not being printed, and the print will not be compromised. However, if the specification is one substrate and not laminated, the PCR film may impact the graphics. One of the compromises of PCR is the presence of gels or unmelts which are areas that do not melt uniformly. They will show up as small hard spots. These gels will affect print as the ink will pool around the hard spots.
    • Emmerson Packaging offers 15 – 25% content. Although 100% PCR packaging is available, the resin does not melt uniformly. As a result, there can be unmelts and gels present, which are small un-melted areas in the sealant film. To minimize this impact, we advise limiting the amount of PCR in the product.
